Many State 48 FC teams opened their 2023 – 2024 seasons over the Labor Day holiday. The S48 FC 2006 Girls Black (Verrado) team had a marvelous weekend performance in the Phoenix Rising Cup by reaching the finals of the tournament championship. Selene Martinez converted a last minute penalty kick for the game winning goal in an exciting contest that enabled the team to advance. Coach Francisco Martinez was full of praise for the entire team for their work ethic and strong mentality throughout the competition. The S48 FC 2008 Boys Black (North) team had an outstanding opening weekend as well, finishing as runner up in the Irvine (CA.) World Cup Showcase Tournament. The goal scoring was done by Mark de Leon (2 goals), Chris Simons (2 goals), Diego Armetta and Adithya Asokan, whose 30 yard rocket was not only the game winning goal but also an early candidate for ‘Goal of the Year’. Outstanding performances by captains Jace Barlow and Trevor Scriven highlighted the impressive team performance in one of the nation’s top tournaments. Coach Aspyn Atwood said that the S48 FC 2015 Girls Black (Verrado) team had an awesome performance in a Saturday match, and highlighted the performance of her goalkeeper, Victoria Diaz for her tremendous play.
